Understanding SSNIT Contributions: A Complete Guide for Employers

Payroll May 23, 2026 Cushay & Associates

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) scheme is a mandatory pension programme for all employees in Ghana. As an employer, you are legally required to register your workers, deduct contributions from their salaries, and remit these ? along with your employer contribution ? to SSNIT every month.

Contribution Rates

The current SSNIT contribution structure is:

  • Employee contribution: 5.5% of gross salary
  • Employer contribution: 13% of gross salary
  • Total: 18.5% of gross salary
Of the employer contribution, 2.5% goes to the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL), and the remaining 10.5% goes to SSNIT.

Payment Deadlines

Contributions must be remitted to SSNIT by the 14th of the following month. Late payments attract interest and penalties, and persistent non-compliance can result in legal action against the company and its directors.

Common Employer Mistakes

We frequently help clients correct issues such as: registering employees late, calculating contributions on basic salary rather than gross salary, and missing the monthly remittance deadline.

Our payroll management service handles all of this automatically ? ensuring every employee is correctly registered, contributions are accurately calculated, and payments are made on time every month.
